What is a cystoscope?

• A cystoscope is a narrow, long device used to see within the urethra and bladder. It is a sort of endoscope, a medical equipment used to visually examine inside cavities.
• Cystoscopes are classified into the following:
• There are two major kinds of cystoscopes:
  • Rigid cystoscopes: These are non-bendable and may be used for operations requiring the passage of tiny tools via the cystoscope, such as biopsies or tumor excision. Because of this, stiff cystoscopes usually need sedation or general anesthesia.
  • Flexible cystoscopes: These are flexible and can follow the natural curvature of the urethra, making the exam more pleasant for patients. Flexible cystoscopes are often used under local anesthetic alone.

What exactly is a cystoscopy used for?

• Cystoscopy may be performed for a number of reasons, including:
• Diagnosing urinary tract issues such as bladder stones, tumors, or inflammation.
• Investigating blood in the urine.
• Helping to put catheters.
• Obtaining bladder tissue biopsies using cystoscopy.

Cystoscopy procedure:

• A cystoscope is placed into the urethra and progressed to the bladder.
• Fluid (water or saline) may be introduced via the cystoscope to expand the bladder and improve vision.
• The doctor will use the cystoscope’s lens and light source to inspect the urethral and bladder linings.
• Depending on the purpose of the cystoscopy, additional tools may be placed via the cystoscope to conduct a biopsy or other treatment.
