Orbital Rim Dissector

Description

An orbital rim dissector is a specialist surgical device used for the careful dissection of tissues around the eye socket, commonly known as the orbital rim. This treatment is often necessary for ophthalmic (eye) and face plastic operations.

Purpose

There are various reasons to use an orbital rim dissector, including:

• During orbital osteotomies, the periosteum (the tissue that lines the bone) is separated from the orbital rim. This provides access to the underlying bone components for treatments such as orbital decompression and fracture repair.
• Blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) involves the dissection of soft tissues surrounding the eye to reveal the underlying structures.
• Aiding in the extraction of bone grafts from the orbital rim for use in face reconstruction surgery.

Types

Orbital rim dissectors are available in a variety of designs to meet the surgeon’s individual demands and the treatment being done. There are two major categories.

• Endoscopic Orbital Rim Dissector: This slim dissector is intended for use with an endoscope (a thin, illuminated tube) for minimally invasive treatments. It enables for enhanced visibility and accurate dissection with a little incision.

Design Features:

Orbital rim dissectors have certain similar design features:

• Tip: The dissector’s tip is generally blunt and slanted to allow for sharp dissection while reducing the danger of tissue injury.
• Shaft: The shaft may be straight or curved, depending on the kind of dissector and its intended purpose. A curved shaft improves access to locations near the orbital rim.
• Handle: The handle is ergonomically built for easy handling and excellent control during dissection.
